The monastery complex was created by St.
Kevin in the 6th century and continued its monastic work until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539.
Most of the buildings were constructed between the 8th and 12th centuries and were restored in the 19th century.
The monastery became an important pilgrimage centre after the saint's death.
The complex suffered several Viking attacks but the worst looting was suffered in 1398 when most of the buildings were destroyed by the English.
